Bionomics and Eco-friendly Management of Linseed Bud fly, Dasineura lini Barnes, on Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.)

ABSTRACT

Linseed, scientifically known as Linum usitatissimum Linn. holds significance as one of the traditional oilseed crops throughout history popularly it is referred as poor man’s crop in India. It is a prominent oilseed crop cultivated during the Rabi season and is known by various names in different parts of India such as Alsi, Tisi, Mosina and Arise. Globally, linseed is cultivated for production of oil, fibres and flax. Linseed crop is mainly attacked by over more than eight different insect pests. Among of these pests, linseed bud fly (Dasyneura lini L.) identified as the very harmful pest, particularly on flower buds. The level of damage can range from 13.6 to as high as 75.8 per cent on the flower buds. As knowing the adverse effects of practicing chemical management, we encourage farmers to opt eco-friendly management approaches instead of conventional chemical approaches by making them aware about benefits and effectiveness of eco-friendly management practices.
