ABSTRACT
The aquaculture sector in India is critically affected by gender disparity in terms of pay and job status. In the present study, we tried to address the knowledge gap in the magnitude of contributions by women in the aquaculture sector of Kerala. The study identified that women were involved in only 17.56% of the labour hours in farm activities. Most of the culture ponds (small-sized) were managed and maintained by family labourers in which women contributed to 37.8% of the total family labour. The study revealed that there is a gender-based pay disparity in aquaculture activities. The paper identifies a need for policy changes, ensuring minimum wages for women, promoting their entrepreneurial skills with financial and technical assistance, and by granting aquaculture and fishing permits.
