ABSTRACT

Water is most important for human and animal life, maintenance of ecological balance and developmental activities. According to the 12th Five year Plan, In India water availability is 1123 billion cubic meters (BCM) against a current estimated demand is 710 BCM. It also estimated that the water demand would rise to 1093 BCM by 2025. Though the existing water availability in the immediate future seems to be adequate, with the near constant supply of water resources in front of increasing due to population growth, urbanization and industrialization will hamper the water supply-demand balance. Further, the country’s water balance estimates does not reflect the variations in water balance across time and space certain areas having a positive water balance and others facing acute shortage. More than 80 percent of the total available water resources were allocated for irrigation purposes and the rest meeting the domestic and industrial water demands. In this article needs and future on-farm water demand in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand has been discussed.
