Recirculatory Biofloc System in aquaculture: An Innovative Approach for Feed Management to Enhance Growth and Production

ABSTRACT

Recirculatory Biofloc System (RBS) technique modifies the contest of Biofloc Technology (BFT), where the inheritor characteristic of biofloc and the positive digits of Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) is combined for enhancing production. The total suspended solids (TSS) should be maintained at an optimum level in BFT for its better functionality. However, the necessity of good maintenance of the C/N ratio in BFT causes an increase in TAN (Total Ammonia Nitrogen) during the culture period and in addition, it creates a higher requirement of carbohydrate sources, which results in the increase in TSS content in the water eventually affects the survivability and growth of animals. Therefore, it has become a very crucial step to combine RAS with BFT so that recirculation can cover such consequences of BFT in long run. The combinatorial effect of better growth in BFT and better survivability in RAS leads to the success of RBS in aquaculture.
