Abstract:
Rapid drug discovery has been possible due to genomics approaches. The development of next-generation sequencing technologies, the study of expressed human genes and the availability of data on all human genes and associated protein code phenotypes may transform drug development strategies and provide effective preventive approaches. This has an impact on the process of developing drugs utilizing genomics-based methods. Pharmacogenomics applies genomic technologies like gene sequencing, population genetics, and functional analysis for drugs in clinical development and on the market. Here, we discuss the use of such high throughput technologies in target discovery, the need of studying gene expression in bulk and single cells to comprehend the biological impact of a drug target, and CRISPR editing to prioritize drug targets. Genomics enabled the development of personalized medicine using a genetic profile of an individual helps more in drug-targeted discovery. Moreover, we also discuss the different opportunities for genome-wide studies, drug perturbation, and the selection of biomarkers.
