“Wonder Grains-Millet”: Improvement through Next-Generation Sequencing

Author : Ashutosh Singh, Guptnath Trivedi, Khem Raj Meena

ABSTRACT

Despite having high nutritional value and climate resilience, many studies have been carried out on millet genetic improvement. The major problem for millet improvement programs is the lack of efficiently characterized genomic resources exploiting variations for specific traits. The development of genomic tools has enormous potential to improve the efficiency and precision of conventional breeding. Recent developments in the next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies enabled us to provide low-cost sequence information of crop genomes. The simultaneous discovery of high-throughput markers and multiplexed genotyping platforms speed up marker-assisted breeding. Plant breeders could improve their genetic makeup.
