Over the last three decades, the different stakeholders in agricultural and rural development (including fisheries, livestock and forestry) have experienced enormous economic, environmental and political change. During 1980-1990, a global consensus was reached that liberalization and global trade would bring about economic growth, development and wealth for the vast majority. The globalization of economies around the world impacts the economic and food security of all nations, it is increasingly recognized. Especially in the current age of rapid globalization, liberalization and privatization that has created new opportunities and threats, now the farmers must be organized to take part in and proliferate in developing processes (World Bank, 2007). Since then, importance of farmers’ producer organization has been realized.
Farmers Producers ` Organizations are organisations that are able to protect small farmers against the impact of globalisation, and make them play a productive role in modern competitive markets. Producers’ organisations, in addition to providing technological advice in the production process, help farmers to better buy and sell because of size advantages and lower transaction costs for buyers and sellers as well as social capital generation. It also helps to negotiate better production and credit rates and thus can help to remove a factor and product-related market in which smallholder farmers are typically stuck (Patibandla and Sastry, 2004).
Farmers’ organizations can serve as a possible cause for agricultural and rural development. Farmers` organizations, which can maintain the pennon of growth well ahead of the local level and support the rest of society, are acting as `engines of progress.` There is a deep rooted interrelationship with Farmers organization and progress. Empowerment
Empowerment has been defined as “the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one`s life and claiming one`s rights”. Empowerment is an action plan to increase the degree of autonomy and self-determination in individuals and in societies so that they can represent their interests, acting under their own authority, in a responsible and self-determined way. It`s a process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially when you manage your life and assert your rights. Empowerment as action refers to both the self-impotence process and professional support of people, enabling them to overcome and recognize and utilize their resources, their feeling of powerlessness and lack of influence.
Empowerment is defined as "the process of contesting current power relations and gaining more control of power sources." In many respects "domestic economic strength" is also characterized (Mason 1998). Some literature has defied it as decision-making. "Bargaining power" is also an important attribute that is also assigned to empowerment term.
