Abstract

Sorghum is considered a climate-resilient crop grown for grain and fodder purposes in semi-arid regions of India. Like other crops, sorghum also suffers from several biotic stresses like fungal, bacterial and viral diseases. In recent times there has been an increasing trend of viral diseases in sorghum becoming a major constraint for sorghum production in terms of both quality and quantity. Viruses of sorghum are transmitted through insect vectors and survive on ratoons sorghum and in a wide range of grassy weeds during off-seasons. Viral diseases in sorghum could be managed indirectly by altering the date of sowing, managing vectors, following, phytosanitary measures and developing resistant varieties. Under the current scenario, there is a need to develop advanced diagnostics and disease-resistance screening techniques to breed a multiple disease resistant variety for the successful management of viral diseases of sorghum.
