Author : Swapnil G. Temkar and Kundansing R. Jadhao

ABSTRACT

Veld grape (Cissus quadrangularis) is a perennial, deciduous or succulent climbing plant in the Vitaceae family. It has also traditionally been used in Ayurveda and other forms of traditional medicine. The plant has a rich source of different bioactive compounds including iridoids, stilbenes, flavonoids and sterols that justify its wide medicinal use against inflammation, oxidative stress suppression related effects as well as anti-diabetic properties. Being such a powerful herb and versatile medicinal plant, it has multiple roles to play in modern medicine including bone health, inflammation, metabolic disorders and gastro esophageal diseases. This revealed that Veld grape could be a good source of bioactive compounds which should undergo clinical, pathological, molecular and toxicological studies to check their potential for human health.
