ABSTRACT

Makhana is an important cash crop of North Bihar. Value addition in Makhana is an important aspect for enhancing the income level of Makhana growers as well as processors. The small round black or brownish seeds of the crop are converted to popped Makhana by manual processing which increases its value in monetary terms. Value is also added through transport as well as storage. Since, Makhana is a localized crop, its value enhances manifold when popped Makhana is transported to large cities of India from its production place. Similarly, storage in godown for 6-12 months and sale during peak demand also increases its price significantly.
