Traditional Rice: As functional food

ABSTRACT

Rice is the chief food crop of India dominating the Indian economy widely. Though there are a numerous commercial varieties of rice released from many research institutes of the country, the rural villagers still have the habit of storing and conserving the traditional rice varieties. This type of habits can be seen among the farmers of the Cauvery Delta near Thanjavur, popularly called Tamil Nadu’s rice bowl. The farmers around this area, conserve many rice varieties by timely cultivation and storing their seeds for the next season. The important and popular traditional rice varieties among them includes, Karupu Kavuni, Kattuyanam and Thuya malli. These rice varieties have pigmented kernels that are rich flavonoids and antioxidants. The nutritional constituents of these three rice varieties include iron, zinc, potassium, sodium, protein, carbohydrates and many other vitamins. Karupu kavuni, Kattuyanam and Thuya malli are yet to be exploited at commercial level that have a greater potential to benefits the human health.
