Author : Mounika Akula, Nirmala Bandumula and Santosha Rathod
ABSTRACT
The central government as well as all state governments implemented income support schemes to bring out farmers from farm distress, boost the production, and stimulate growth of the agriculture sector, through providing timely investment support for the purchase of inputs like seeds, fertilizers and for other farm activities. Telangana introduced an investment support scheme (i.e. Rythu Bandhu) in 2018 that provides assistance of Rs. 5,000 per acre per season. It covers all the agricultural land-holding farmers and tenants are excluded from the scheme. The PM-KISAN a central government scheme introduced in December 2018 also covers all land-holding farmers with an incentive of Rs. 6000 in three equal instalments per year to procure inputs and other household needs. KALIA scheme implemented by the Odisha government covers the small and marginal farmers, tenants, and landless labourers providing a cash incentive of Rs. 10,000 per annum per farmer family (including PM KISAN) in two instalments. The Rythu Bharosa covers all farm landowners and tenant farmers of Andhra Pradesh with an assistance of Rs. 13,500 per annum per farm family. Similarly, other states have also started similar schemes for different sections of farmers. The income support schemes help the farmers in initial investment in critical inputs in agriculture and augment the income of the beneficiary farmers.
