ABSTRACT

Small indigenous fishes (SIF) grow to a maximum size of 25-30 cm in the mature or adult stage of their life cycle and are commonly found in low-lying areas such as wetlands, lowland areas, beels, paddy fields, etc. SIF contributes significantly to the food and income security of the rural population through its wild capture. So far, very little importance has been given to its culture potential, nutrition, processing, and captive breeding even though it has a good market price and demand and is rich in protein vitamins and other essential micronutrients. Therefore, to harness its potential it could be integrated with the paddy cultivation in areas of Sundarbans where the land shaping techniques developed by ICAR-CSSRI, RRS, Canning Town has been adopted.
