Abstract

The integration of biofuels in the fishing industry presents a promising approach to reducing environmental impact and operational costs. This study quantitatively examines the potential benefits and challenges associated with adopting biofuels in fishing vessels and related operations. Key advantages include a projected 30-40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 25% decrease in dependence on fossil fuels, alongside potential economic gains from government incentives estimated to lower operational costs by up to 15% annually. However, challenges such as the need for infrastructure adaptation, an initial investment cost increase of approximately 20-25%, and ensuring a stable supply of sustainable biofuels must be addressed. The research evaluates biodiesel and bioethanol as viable biofuel options and analyzes their compatibility with existing marine engines, with test results indicating only minor modifications required for efficient usage. Additionally, the study assesses the economic viability of biofuel adoption across various scales of fishing operations, finding that smaller-scale operations may experience slower returns on investment compared to larger-scale ventures. These findings suggest that, despite the challenges, the long-term benefits of biofuel integration in the fishing industry could contribute significantly to environmental sustainability and economic resilience within the sector.
