Author : Priyanka Roy, Saikat Maji & Prashish Singh

ABSTRACT

Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) is a reservoir of traditional wisdom and practices that have evolved over generations within indigenous communities, intimately connected to their culture, environment, and identity. This knowledge spans a wide spectrum of domains, including agriculture, healthcare, resource management, and more. In North East India, famous for its varied landscapes and cultures, ITK is significant in addressing the region`s unique agricultural challenges, promoting sustainability, and preserving cultural heritage. This paper explores the importance of ITK in North East India, emphasizing its role in adapting to local conditions, conserving biodiversity, ensuring food security, and empowering communities. ITK bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, offering sustainable solutions to environmental changes and economic challenges. However, the preservation of ITK faces obstacles, including language barriers, ethical considerations, and resource limitations. Despite these challenges, documenting ITK is essential to safeguard this invaluable knowledge and facilitate its integration into contemporary practices. Through respectful collaboration, ITK can contribute to a more resilient, culturally rich, and sustainable future for North East India and beyond.
