Postharvest Losses of Papaya and Practice for Management

Author : K. Prasad and Joy Rudra Paul

ABSTRACT

Papaya is one of the most important fruits in India, cultivated in the entire tropical and subtropical region of the country. Despite a large production with highest productivity among all the fruits grown in India, due to the perishable nature of papaya, a major portion of the production goes into waste, which is reported to be around 40-60% of the total production at various papaya growing regions. The post-harvest losses in papaya may be due to various factors such as improper harvesting, mishandling of the fruits, improper storage, packaging, transportation, and post-harvest diseases. Proper postharvest management of papaya will reduce the post-harvest losses which will ensure nutritional security as well as the best returns to the farmers and agro-industries.
