Phytochemicals from herbs and spices in prevention and control some of human pathogenic respiratory viruses

Nature is bestowed upon us many useful chemicals embedded in variety of plants waiting for us to explore and find out its usefulness. Plants have the ability to produce a wide range of compounds including phenolics, terpenoids, flavonoids, phytoalexins, lignans, and tannins which are plants adaptive mechanism against various biotic and abiotic stresses. World Health Organization report says that about 80% of the world’s population depend on medicinal plants to satisfy their health requirements. The occurrence of viral epidemic and pandemic in all over the world necessitates the search in plant kingdom, an appropriate medicines for virus inhibition. This review focuses on phytochemicals present in few herbs and spices which could be taken up for its antiviral activity with specific references to respiratory virus illness.
