Author : Geetha M. L, Ankhila R .H, Sunil Sunani

ABSTRACT

Studying the distribution of women`s participation in different occupations provides valuable insights into the dynamics of labor market trends, gender inequalities, and socio-economic development. Hence the study examines distribution of women`s participation in various occupations in India over four time periods using data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS). The results show a declining trend in the percentage of women engaged in agriculture, indicating a shift towards non-agricultural sectors. The percentage of women in professional, technical, and managerial work, as well as sales and services, consistently increased over the years. However, the percentage of women engaged in clerical work, household and domestic work, unskilled manual work, and other occupations remains relatively low. The study also reveals significant regional variations in women`s participation in agriculture. Socio-demographic factors such as education, age, marital status, and wealth quintile play a crucial role in determining women`s participation in agriculture. By recognizing and addressing barriers to women`s employment and advancement, policymakers, businesses, and civil society can work towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable workforce, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic growth and development in India.
