Molecular Breeding Approaches for Cereal Biofortification

ABSTRACT
Cereals are primary staple food for human and are easily available to all households. Biofortification of cereals holds prime significance for deprived sections mainly dependent on cereal diet for their calorie requirement due to economic, social or policy constraints. Recent omics-based breeding strategies offer great opportunities for breeders by reducing the unpredictable environmental influence and more accurate selection. Several bio-fortified cultivars have been released in cereals and are in cultivation. Genome editing has come up in a better way to modify target genes and enable breeders for trait improvement including nutri-rich cereals. More precise and robust genotypes in several crops are in pipeline which are surely going to be a game-changer in bringing nutri-rich stress tolerant high yielding quality cereal varieties.
