Mitigating Pre-Harvest Fruit Drop in Darjeeling Mandarin: Key Factors and Management Strategies

Abstract

Though many fruits of the North-Eastern Hills are famous but Darjeeling Mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) has its own special significance which is enjoyed by the people of the surrounding areas as well as the people of the whole country. It is one of the important cash crops of the hills known for its sweet taste. The crop is facing reduction in area cultivation due to various biotic and abiotic reasons. One of the major reason for decline is severe fruit drop before harvesting, which causes severe economic losses in yield of the crop. Dropping of mature fruits just before harvesting is also known as Pre-harvest fruit drop. These dropped fruits are unfit for human consumption. This article covers the reason behind preharvest fruit drops and also gives management for control of fruit drop. So that farmers and the scientific community can minimize or control the fruit drop.
