Integrated Weed Management for Improving Productivity of Field Crops

Author : T. Varatharajan

Depending on the crop and its ability to compete, yield losses from weeds in key crops range from 30 to 70 %.  The initial fast growth of weeds, germination in multiple flushes from the weed seed bank, heavy seed production with dormancy and longevity, and the highly adaptable nature of weeds give them an upper hand over crops until appropriate management practices are adopted. Due to the occurrence of a variety of weed species and their powerful survival mechanisms, no single weed management strategy could work perfectly.  Therefore, an integrated weed management strategy that combines a number of interconnected and supportive strategies is quite helpful in managing the weeds effectively and efficiently, and improve crop yields.
