Heat stress is a major limiting factor for tomato production in open field conditions in developing countries like India. To adapt to existing heat stress, the development of cultivars with increased resilience is the need of the hour. Understanding the morphological, physiological, and genetic control of tomato plants in responses to elevated temperature conditions is a prerequisite to developing cultivars. Here, we attempt to compile recent studies of heat stress screening and to exploit genetic and genomic resources in tomato. We also reviewed morphological, physiological, and genetic changes occur in tomato due to heat stress. Characterization of genetic resources including the wild species of tomato for heat tolerance and advanced breeding tools like genome editing paves the new way for developing new cultivars adapted to heat stress.
