Genetics for improvement of drought tolerance in Rice

Author : Kailash Chandra Samal, Jyoti Prakash Sahoo and Ambika Prasad Mishra

ABSTRACT

For rice cultivation, a significant quantitative characteristic is drought tolerance. Different types of environmental stress such as radiance, temperature, nutrient scarcity and nutrient toxicity render it very difficult to breed for drought tolerance in rice. Interdisciplinary researchers have sought to use different methods to dissect and understand the mechanisms of rice resistance to drought stress. In conjunction with advances in breeding methodologies and effective phenotyping, recent genetic techniques and genomics methods are likely to discover candidate genes and metabolic pathways underlying drought resistance in rice. In plant growth, the WRKY transcription factors are engaged in various biological processes. Study programs can address the problem by integrating drought tolerance characteristics with different genetic and genomic methods, such as microarrays, quantitative trait loci (QTLs), members of the WRKY gene family, using a multidisciplinary approach to improve rice tolerance to drought.
