ABSTRACT
Recently passed three Farm Acts has triggered farmer agitations throughout India. Though the government claims these acts will change the Indian agriculture sector and bring fortune to farmers, why are they protesting then? The current article looks into the depoliticized facts related to the Farm Acts. Major reforms in agricultural marketing are targeted through the three acts viz., The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) act 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services act 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) act 2020 but along with proposed merits, there are considerable matters of concern that cannot be overlooked. Changes like liberalizing agricultural marketing sector by providing a parallel unregulated market in non-mandi areas, removal of the stocking barrier of six essential commodities and facilitating the entry of farmers into agribusiness through contracts with corporate sector are aimed to be brought by the acts but farmers doubt these acts to be more corporate-friendly and fear being exploited. Hence, let’s look into the prospects and apprehensions along with opinions of people from various sectors and get our facts straight on the farm acts 2020.
