Ecological Value of Sewan Grasslands in Western Rajasthan
Author : Reena Rani, Archana Sanyal, Ankita Trivedi and Gurvinder Singh
Abstract
Western Rajasthan is the major part of the Thar desert where low and erratic rainfall, high temperature and dust storms in summer impose severe restrictions for arable cropping. Soil conservation practices involving grasses could play an important role in providing fodder for animals and reducing soil erosion under such extreme conditions. Sewan (Lasiurus sindicus Henr.), an important perennial grass cover of this region, flourishes well on sandy plains, low dunes and hummocks. Sewan grasslands have a vital role in forage production, in situ grazing and soil stabilization in the arid region.
Keywords- Desert, erosion, grasslands and sewan
