ABSTRACT
Decision-support systems (DSSs) are interactive computer-based systems that help decision-makers in understanding and solving unstructured problems under complex, uncertain conditions. Experimental use of DSSs has resulted in improved disease suppression, timely application of inputs like fertilizers and pesticides reduces the dose of chemical application and minimizes risks of crop damage. In most cases, DSSs helps in the use of optimum quantities of active substances at the critical crop growth stage, as compared with normal spraying practices. Many of the DSSs have been developed over the years and are readily available and inexpensive. However, most farm managers do not know and also, they are not using them as part of their integrated pest management (IPM) practices. This article explains the evolution, uses and limitations of the decision support systems (DSSs).
