ABSTRACT

Globally, petroleum based plastic material has largest chunk in food packaging materials. Whereas, these packaging materials are major contributor to plastic waste generated, especially single use plastics. The biodegradable packaging materials developed from natural sources are need of the hour to curb the use of plastic-based packaging materials in food industry. Many researchers have come up with innovative food packaging materials, that originate from natural sources and are biodegradable in nature. These materials are strong, flexible, mouldable, and versatile enough to meet the needs of food industry which till date were catered by the petroleum-based plastics materials such as HDPE, LDPE, polythene terephthalate (PET), PVC, polystyrene (PS), crystalline polythene terephthalate (CPET) etc.
