Aquamimicry: An Approach towards Sustainable Organic Farming

Author : Mutum Deepti, Martina Meinam and Amom Mahendrajit

ABSTRACT

With the rising demand for fish worldwide, aquaculture`s contribution to the global food supply is crucial. Different cutting-edge technologies have been developed emphasizing on environmental conservation and eco-safety. Aquamimicry (Copefloc technology) is one of many novel technologies that have shown promising results in achieving long-term sustainability. It simulates a natural environment in controlled conditions. Maintaining a specific carbon to nitrogen ratio (C: N) in this system along with probiotics addition allows heterotrophic bacteria to use nitrogenous metabolites, thereby preserving water quality and providing protein-rich live feed i.e., copepods. It facilitates in improving the health of the organism and in turn, significantly reduces the dependence on supplementary feed. However, aquamimicry is not widely used by aqua farmers as there is a lack of information. The current article focuses on the underlying knowledge and future prospects of employing aquamimicry technology to accelerate the aquaculture farming industry.
