Application of Remote Sensing Technologies in Surface Soil Moisture Estimation

Author : Pragya

ABSTRACT

Remote sensing technology offers huge applicability for the recognition, evaluation, and tracking of irrigation fields, water resource availability, consumption, land use, crop type, scheduling of irrigation, crop yield estimation, and pests and diseases identification and so on. Crop yield is highly dependent on soil water status during crop growth duration. Soil moisture is an essential parameter in agriculture because it influences fractioning of latent and sensible heat fluxes from net solar radiation thus impacting crop growth. Traditional point measuring ways (e.g., gravimetric method or neutron probe) are insufficient for comprehending the temporal and spatial changes in soil moisture. Soil moisture can vary greatly in area and time due to the variability of soil type, land use, and terrain. Thus, remote sensing can be utilised as an efficient method to estimate surface soil moisture in larger spatial scale and various time period.
