Author : Reshma Gills and Subhashree Sahu
ABSTRACT
Agricultural heritage systems are living, evolving systems of human communities in an intricate relationship with their territory, cultural or agricultural landscape or biophysical and wider social environment. They are characterised by remarkable agro-biodiversity, traditional knowledge, invaluable cultures and landscapes. They are sustainably managed by farmers, herders, fisher folk, and forest people in ways that contribute to their livelihoods and food security. To date, 74 such systems have been designated in 24 countries. The article discusses some of India’s most popular heritage systems: the Kashmir Saffron Heritage, Kuttanad Below Sea Level Farming System, and Koraput Traditional Agriculture. These are important for several reasons. They provide valuable insights into traditional agricultural practices that can be used to develop more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. They also help to conserve agro-biodiversity, which is essential for food security. They will eventually promote rural development and poverty alleviation.
