Agricultural extension towards climate resilient agriculture

Author : Maitrayee Dutta, Pabitra Kumar Das, Rishi Kumar Singh

ABSTRACT

The biggest environmental threat to the global effort to combat hunger, malnutrition, disease, and poverty is undoubtedly climate change. Due to its reliance on local climate factors like rainfall, agriculture is the most fragile and sensitive sector affected by global climate change due to factors like the health of the soil, temperature, etc. To overcome the difficulties, agriculture must become ‘climate-resilient’ to sustainably raise agricultural output and incomes in response to the threats posed by global climate change. The ICAR initiative titled ‘National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture’ aims to make the country`s most vulnerable regions climate resilient (NICRA). This paper aims to identify the ways by which an agricultural extension agent can help smallholder farmers navigate and deal with the effects of climate change. Therefore, by utilizing the appropriate strategies to raise awareness regarding the various adaptation and mitigation strategies, extension agents can play a significant role in assisting farmers to deal with the varied implications of global climate change.
